How to Change Your Driving Test Date
There are two legal ways to change your UK driving test date. One is free but slow, one costs £12 but usually gets you an earlier test in days. Here's exactly how both work.
Option A — Rebook via DVSA
Change your test through gov.uk. Free. Works well for a later date, rarely works for an earlier one because of the 22+ week backlog.
Option B — Swap with another learner

Option A: Rebook your driving test via DVSA
If you want a later test date — for example, to give yourself more time to practise — DVSA's own change-test system is the right tool. It's free, direct, and keeps your booking reference.

- 2.Enter your driving licence number and DVSA booking reference.
- 3.Choose a new date from the slots shown. At least 3 clear working days' notice required.
- 4.Confirm. DVSA emails you a new confirmation.
Reality check: Most learners trying to change to an earlier date find no slots available — the UK driving test waiting list is currently 22+ weeks. If an earlier date is what you want, skip to Option B.
Option B: Swap your test date with another learner
You keep your test slot as "payment" for someone else's. You want an earlier date; somebody else wants a later date. A direct swap — through DVSA's own system — makes both of you happy at once.
